Letter Regarding NFPA 70-2023 Edition, National Electrical Code

NFPA Standards Administration

January 22, 2024

Tesla, ChargePoint, ABB E-mobility, Electrify America, FLO, EVBox, and ZETA submit comments regarding the proposed Tentative Interim Amendment (TIA) Log No. 1767 for NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code. The TIA would require adding installation requirements for emergency disconnects or "e-stops" at DC fast charging stations, similar to the requirement for fuel dispensing facilities under NFPA 30A. In the letter, signatories identified several concerns with the TIA, including that several sections are technically inconsistent, inaccurate, or infeasible. The letter also noted that gas stations are not analogous to EV charging stations, emergency disconnects do not sufficiently increase public safety, and EVs and EV charging is safe and does not constitute a previously unknown hazard.
