ZETA Executive Director Celebrates One Million EV Sales In 2023

December 5, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Yesterday, the Zero Emission Transportation Association (ZETA) welcomed the announcement by Gabe Klein, the Executive Director of the U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation that more than one million battery electric vehicles have been sold in 2023—according to Bloomberg BNEF data. This is the first time that a million EVs have been sold in a calendar year and marks a significant surge in EV sales during the past few years. A separate report by BloombergNEF in September found that it took 10 years for the first million EVs to be sold in the U.S., and three years to sell the second million vehicles.

In response, Albert Gore, the Executive Director of the ZETA, released the following statement:

“One million EV sales in 2023 is a major milestone for the EV industry and a major step towards transportation electrification. National Automobile Dealer Association data shows EV demand continues to grow month-over-month, increasing steadily from 6.4% of new vehicle sales in January to 7.2% in October. This is by far the best year for EV sales in our nation’s history, and with the help of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act more investments are being made in our country to build EVs and create new jobs.”
