WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Zero Emission Transportation Association’s Executive Director, Albert Gore, issued the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s plan to repeal the “endangerment finding” that authorizes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles:
“Today’s attempt to backtrack on long-settled law comes at a moment when clean car sales are growing steadily and powering a battery and vehicle manufacturing boom across the United States. Millions of new EVs have been sold here over the last two years, and 7 out of 10 were built right here in the United States – while only half of gas-powered cars sold were built domestically. Globally, EVs now account for 25% of new vehicle sales. This is a proven technology for which demand is rapidly growing around the world, and the battery and EV supply chain in the United States is going to compete for it.
“Taking backward steps and adding new regulatory uncertainty harms consumers, unsettles markets, and will complicate ongoing business decisions for auto manufacturers. Meanwhile, international markets will continue to buy efficient and electrified cars. We cannot cede this market to our chief global competitors. The goals of American job growth and a globally competitive economy are all aligned with the success of our U.S. EV and battery industry.”
