As more electric vehicles (EVs) are deployed on the road, demand for safety policies that accurately reflect current technology is increasing.
Although EV fires are statistically less frequent than internal combustion vehicle fires, continued research and data collection are needed to better educate the public and policymakers around the accurate number of incidents involving an EV, its battery, or the charger. When it comes to safety policy, a comprehensive approach from a variety of perspectives such as industry partners, the fire service, and policymakers is needed to understand an inherently complicated topic such as electric vehicles and infrastructure.
As a result, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and the Zero Emission Transportation Association (ZETA) have collaborated to highlight the current market analysis of electric vehicle and electric vehicle charging infrastructure deployment, address common fire safety misconceptions and realities, and highlight the industries’ current key safety regulations. Throughout the development of this paper, NEMA and ZETA also partnered with the Electrical Safety Foundation International to develop a consumer survey of electric vehicle drivers to highlight key behaviors and understanding of existing technology.
