Every driver deserves to feel safe in their car—regardless of drivetrain. As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain popularity, it's important to acknowledge that new technologies come with unique considerations. While EV fires are uncommon, ZETA is leading the charge in ensuring that both consumers and first responders are fully prepared for any EV fire incidents that may occur.

EVs and Fire Safety: An Evolving Landscape

EVs are still a relatively new technology, and like any emerging innovation in the consumer space, it's critical to address the potential challenges they might bring. While EV fires occur less frequently than those in conventional gas vehicles, it's essential to recognize that they can still happen. As a result, ZETA is working to ensure that first responders are equipped with the knowledge, tools, and protocols to handle EV fire situations when they arise.

Preparedness is Key

ZETA is committed to partnering with first responders, public safety officials, and OEMs to:

  • Support federal legislation that advances first responder education and training in electric vehicle charging and battery systems.
  • Align federal and state policymakers on developing safety standards in the EV sector.
  • Improve federal data-gathering efforts and increase public awareness of battery safety information.
  • Support hands-on training on lithium-ion battery behavior and extinguishing protocols.
  • Promote standardized labeling and symbols to help responders quickly identify EVs at a crash scene.
  • Support federal resources for continued research and development into battery safety innovation.
  • Share best practices from our members and fire safety leaders to inform best practices, battery treatment, and post-collision procedures.

We believe that strong coordination with first responders is a smart policy for public safety infrastructure.

ZETA’s Role in EV Fire Safety

ZETA is at the forefront of this issue, working proactively with automakers, first responders, and regulatory bodies to address fire safety concerns. We are developing guidelines to ensure that first responders know how to identify EVs in emergency situations and are well-equipped to handle any incidents that may arise. Our goal is for the industry to be proactive and ensure that consumers and first responders are informed, prepared, and equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to handle EV-related incidents when they occur.
